The department received multiple reports of unwarranted searches and arrests.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) launched a civil rights probe into the police department of Lexington, Mississippi this week after the agency received credible reports of police misconduct. Lexington’s population is 83 percent black, and the reports submitted to the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division claim that Lexington police officers commonly use excessive force, conduct unjustified stops and searches, and arrest people just for using profane language.
“No city, no town, no law enforcement agency is too big or too small to evade our enforcement of the constitutional rights every American enjoys,” said Civil Rights Division Assistant Attorney General Kristin Clarke, at a press conference in Mississippi’s capital city, Jackson.
